Is it possible to design your dream life? To start where you are today and determine where you want to be tomorrow?

Katie Richardson found out that you can—and she teaches other business owners how to do it, too.

Beginning to Design her Life

But that’s not how Katie got started. She went to college, where she got a degree in design. She also got married while in school to another design student. While he began his career in product design, she stayed home with their growing family.

Like many stay-at-home moms, Katie knew that what she was doing was important. At the same time, she felt like she could do and be amore. That’s when she started designing and selling products. What started as something she did while her children napped grew to a multimillion dollar international company, with her products distributed in over 25 countries.

As you’ll hear from Katie, her business success wasn’t without its difficulties. Being prompted to follow another path, she ended up selling her business and starting over as a business coach.

Katie’d had a successful business, giving her the knowledge and insight to help others with theirs. At first she struggled with imposter syndrome—a common condition among entrepreneurs. But she soon began to see how her talents could be put to use helping others to design their lives.

Design Your Dream Life

Designing your dream life, according to Katie, starts with what she calls a Compass Sketch. This unique practice helps to eliminate internal battles, helping you design your business in a way that aligns with you internally. For examples, your core values, and the message you share with the world.  It also includes writing down your goals, and then establishing what you need to do to achieve those goals within a specific time period.

By knowing where you want to go and the steps you need to get there, you can take actionable steps towards it. It also allows you to determine if what you’re doing right now aligns with that goal. Also,  the goal you set should always be a little out of reach.

When you listen to the podcast, you’ll hear some of the ways that Katie achieved success in her businesses. She also explains how her husband, Ben, has helped to keep her moving forward. When she started coaching, he suggested a goal that seemed completely nuts to her, but it got her thinking about what she COULD do. She ended up hitting her goal within a month, and tripling it by the end of their first quarter. Having a goal that’s achievable—but just a tiny bit out of reach—energized her rather than overwhelming her.

How to Build a Prototype

On this episode of How to Sell Online, you’ll learn so much about not only how to design your dream life, but also how to design a product. Katie Richardson shares the remarkable process she’s followed in creating her products. In each case, she started with a problem to be solved. From there, she began the design process, using materials you’d last expect. I know that I was surprised!
