Can you really go from $50 and a cellphone to a million-dollar online business?
Is it possible to just start with what you have and turn it into opportunity?
I believe 100% that you can–and Nick Yegros and his wife Lidia are just one of the many reasons why. Nick joined me on the How to Sell Online podcast to share his story—including how he views business, success and mentorship.
Let’s talk about Nick’s background because he is, in every respect, living the American dream. He grew up in Paraguay, eventually emigrating to the States. He and Lidia worked hard, and wanted to create a good life for themselves. While working at a big box store, he would see others who seemed successful but instead of jealous, he became inspired by them.
The Start of a Million Dollar Online Business
Eventually he met a man named Shane, who eventually became a friend and mentor. It was Shane who talked to Nick about how becoming a business owner was the path to financial success, and even offered to show him how to do it.
Nick listened and began to take every opportunity to learn about business and understand how to put systems in place. By then, he’d started working in the countertop business and launched a side-hustle doing countertop repairs. In the meantime, Lidia made baby hats to sell on Etsy, allowing her to stay at home once they began to have children.
As their family grew, so did their Etsy business. One of the biggest moments came when they discovered that adding a complementary product to their baby hats, with the upsell making them more money. When Nick’s sister-in-law returned from a church mission, she began working for the couple. Their business expanded further.
But one of the BEST things happened (at least, I think so!) when Nick and Lidia learned about Pick Your Plum—which I owned back then—from Shane. He knew about the couple’s Etsy shop and suggested that they try selling on the Pick Your Plum platform. Instead of selling their baby hats, they decided to try selling scarves—and they did make a profit. Ultimately, however, they decided to return to what they knew best: selling kid’s clothes online.
That’s when the couple launched Bodoke Kids (you’ll wanna listen to this podcast to learn where the name came from!!!)
Selling Children's Clothes Online
One of my favorite facts about their experience is that they only had little boys…and yet they chose to launch a clothing line filled with very cute and very GIRLY clothing. Here’s the reason behind it: at the church they attended at the time, 11 women were pregnant, including Lidia. Of all of those expectant moms, she was the only mama welcoming a boy. That was all the market research they needed, so when they started selling children’s clothing online, they filled their boutique with absolutely darling pieces that kinda made me wish my girls were little again. (And by the way–they now do sell boys clothing in their online store too.)
I interviewed Lidia about Bodoke Kids here on my podcast, and she shared more about how Bodoke Kids grew to what is now a now million dollar online company. But Nick shared a few of the other things that they learned along the way that were especially impactful to him.
The two of them decided to participate in a challenge I hosted in which participants were challenged to literally create money without spending anything on products. Nick and Lidia brainstormed what they could do—and identified items they could sell. Within a couple of days, they’d generated $150!
These kinds of experiences proved to Nick that starting a business didn’t have to cost a lot of money. What you do have to have, he says, is the right mindset. (I agree!) Without the proper mindset and without a system in place, even a great product won’t lead to a success. But with the right ones, its possible grow a million dollar online business. He knows it firsthand.
Mindset Matters
It was this kind of mindset that led Nick to apply online selling principles to his own local business.
He turned down a 6-figure salary to focus full-time on the countertop repair business he’d been doing as a side hustle. He’s identified unexpected influencers who could help grow his business—just like the influencers who help online store owners. And as soon as he was able, Nick hired someone to help with some of the work so that he could focus on the rest. Today he has 10 people working with him. Plus, he and Lidia are exploring even more entrepreneurial opportunities.
Nick’s insights and experiences are absolutely inspiring, and I’m so excited for his and Lidia’s future. I’m also incredibly excited for the English translation of Nick’s book (YES! He’s written a book about everything he’s learned!) called El Poder de la Mente, or the Power of the Mind. The Spanish version is available now on Amazon.
Top Takeaways
It was hard not to include practically everything Nick Yegros said during our interview as Takeaways. But here are some I think are particularly impactful:
- Instead of being jealous of others’ success, use it as inspiration.
- Reach out to someone who has gone where you want to go.
- When you start, your mind will start trying to talk you out of it. Don’t let it.
- Start with what you have, and ask, “what can I do?”
- Add a complementary product to increase order cart value.
- Invest in mindset and a system.
- We all juggle family, friends, health, our soul, and work; if one needs to drop, let it be work—that’s replaceable, and the other 4 aren’t.
- Influencers are everywhere, and we’ll always use that marketing technique because it works.
- We need to have the response-ability to make the right decision when negativity comes into our lives.
