How to Use AI in Your Online Business

Have you been considering how to use AI in your online business? You’re not alone—as the world becomes increasingly digital, it make sense that you look for opportunities to make it work for you—and how you sell your products online. 

Justin Benton joined me on the How to Sell Online podcast to talk about what he’s seeing in the world of artificial intelligence. He recently attended a digital marketing and online business conference that focused on the topic—including ChatGPT, the language model trained by Open AI. 

First, a couple of disclaimers about what AI is and what it isn’t. Software programs like ChatGPT are designed to “scrape” the internet, essentially looking for the answers to the questions you ask it. It doesn’t create new content; it simply takes information and reorganizes it. 

Ways to Use AI in Your Online Business

There are fantastic ways to use AI in your online business. 

For example, if you’re feeling stuck or need to generate ideas about the kinds of pain points your product can solve, ask ChatGPT (it has a free version as of this writing.) Within a matter of seconds, you’ll have ideas popping up on your screen—some you might never have even thought of before. 

Or maybe you’re having a tough time generating content for your social media posts. AI can give you a couple of quick lines that you can adapt to fit your brand. Even if you just need a prompt to get you going, the AI tool Prompts.chat can help. According to Justin, there are even tools like Quillbot.com that can help you refine your results so that they sound less robotic and more natural. 

Limits to AI

Still, there are limitations to what artificial intelligence can do for you. Although it may be able to help with online chats in some instances, it will never replace human interaction. That’s a critical distinction, because although some customers just want convenience, a lot of others want to know that a real person is on the other end of the transaction. 

In fact, in addition to discussing how to use AI in your business, Justin shared insights into the importance of human connection.

AI Can't Replace Human Connection

When you authentically care about and listen to people—especially someone who could change your business—it helps to foster and strengthen relationships.

For example, if you’re trying to find an influencer to work with, take the time to get to know that person. Understand what’s important to them and what their brand is all about. Then figure out the right way to connect with them. I’ve shared stories before about how I sent pizza to one of the really amazing influencers I worked with to just surprise them and thank them for all of their hard work. Another time, I sent tons of paper plates, plastic utensils, paper plates and similar items to an influencer who’d just had a baby. The message: I just did your dishes for you for the next month. It all came down to just getting to know who each influencer was and what would put a big smile on their face. 

Starting our conversation talking about artificial intelligence and ending it talking about human connection made a lot of sense—and had me taking notes like crazy. Needless to say, there were a LOT of takeaways.

  1. If you get stuck, use ChatGPT to get the ball rolling.
  2. Add in .5% grammatical errors to not be too perfect in your writing.
  3. Use Quillbot.com so you can’t tell it’s be written by AI.
  4. Money loves speed, and GPT speeds us up.
  5. If you need a prompt, use Prompts.chat to help.
  6. ChatGPT will not replace human relationships or connection.
  7. Genuinely care about and pay attention to people—especially when trying to find an influencer.
  8. Send gifts. It’s a love language. 
  9. The Rock loves maple syrup.
  10. Identify the one person who will change your business, then care about them and pay attention.
