What the heck is the 110% lie…and why can you really start building your online store if you put a hard stop to it?
Think about how many times you’ve said something kinda like…
“Man, I’m gonna absolutely give 110% to this____________________(insert project name, job, whatever is going to be your focus.)”
Something I tend to hear a lot of is:
“Alison, I can’t start an online store. There’s just no way. I mean, I know that to be successful in ecommerce you really have to give 110%, and I’ve got kids, and so much stuff happening…”
Stop for just a moment and consider what 100% means. It means that every minute of every hour of every day would have to be devoted to whatever project you’re working on. Every thought, every action. No playing with your kids, no having dinner, no breaks, no sleep.
Impractical, right?
So…what if you just gave 50%. Ohhh…ouch.
Just 50%? That seems pretty lightweight.
If you’re just giving 50%, can you start building an online store? I mean, in school a 50% isn’t even a passing grade, right?
But in real-life terms, giving 50% still means giving 12 hours a day, rain or shine. That's still a lot.
Power Hours
Now, let’s be real for a minute. I encourage my students who are building online stores to have what we call “power hours.” Sometimes those hours are before their kids get up, sometimes it’s during the kiddos nap times, or maybe it’s after the end of a workday.
During THOSE hours, staying focused just on business building is really important.
Even then, though, giving 110% does not work.
In fact, if you really, really, REALLY want to build an online store and have it grow consistently, it’s important to kick that 110% lie to the curb…and remove it from your vocabulary all together.
I want you to replace it with what life and momentum coach Melisa Cluff talks about in this episode of my podcast. It may surprise you, but it also may help you see that entering the world of ecommerce and building your own business is more possible than you may think.
Give it a listen and see if you catch a few “aha” moments and how to stop telling yourself the 110% lie.
