Do you ever wish that you had a step-by-step guide to manufacturing products to sell online? Man, I’d have paid a FORTUNE for that when I started my first online store!
The first time I ever manufactured something took me a LOT of back-and-forth communications, more disappointments than I would like to admit, and some downright laughable results.
Kelly Degnan joined me on the How to Sell Online podcast recently to share how she went from being an artist to running a 6-figure online business selling REALLY cool sleepwear—called SKiVYS—in just two years. And part of that journey was learning how to manufacture her products.
But let’s step back for a second. First, can we give Kelly a huge high-five for coming up with an innovation for a product that is hundreds of years old? I mean, how many pajamas and nightgowns and sleep shirts and old ratty tees and oversized boxer shorts have you worn as sleepwear during your life? Most women have had exactly the same experience.
Kelly saw a problem to be solved…and solved it. THEN she solved the problem of how to take the idea in her head to create a prototype…and THEN solved the problem of finding a manufacturer.
Now, she’s sharing her process for manufacturing products to sell online on the podcast. And while the product might be different for everyone, the theory of it will be precisely the same.
In our conversation, Kelly also talks about how she’s stayed motivated, how she thinks through things (warning: running shoes may be part of it) and the importance of community.
There is so much to learn about ecommerce and the process that takes it from a mere concept to a customer holding it in their hands.
So again, if you’ve ever wished you had a step-by-step guide to manufacturing products to sell online, the info in this one is going to be absolute gold to you. You’ll want to take A LOT of notes.
Here are just 10 takeaways I scribbled down during our conversation:
- Find YOUR thing.
- Use unexpected methods.
- Commit to delivering a great product.
- YOU choose the manufacturer that’s right for you.
- Don’t let little things get in your way—move forward, always shifting up.
- Have a community, people in your life that are excited to share in your journey
- Find yourself a business bestie.
- Believe in yourself enough to plan ahead.
- Set a goal and don’t stop ‘til you get there—then set a new one.
- Everybody should have the opportunity to build the life they want.
