Can you turn your hobby into a profitable online business? The answer is yes, and the person to prove it to you is the wonderful Donna Beavers.

Donna began to crochet as a way to stay awake at her job, and it became a comfort to her in times of trouble. It even helped her build a community of crafters like her that she thrived in.

But when it came to making her hobby profitable, it was difficult to make that transition. Like a lot of the students I’ve worked with, it was difficult for her to accept payment for her work.

It’s important to note here that Donna wasn’t just selling the products she crocheted by the time I got to know her. She was creating absolutely amazing patterns that simplified the crocheting process. And the irony is that people were using her patterns to create items that THEY were selling.

Whaaaaa?

When I told Donna that she needed to move away from her monetized blog model and instead start charging for those patterns, she struggled. Big time.

Fortunately, I had her husband Brian on my side, and he encouraged her to transition to an online store. And boom—Donna’s ecommerce journey started.

Has it been easy for Donna? Nope, not always.  But she has found a way to handle them with grace.

She hasn’t just turned her hobby into a profitable online business—she’s also made it into a family business. The income her business generates is enough to support Donna, her husband Brian (who works with her) and their son Jayden.   How cool?!?  She was able to QUIT HER JOB and make enough to support her entire family!

Go listen to this episode now to learn more about Donna and her online store.

My Top 10 Takeaways from my conversation with Donna Beavers:

  1. None of us knows what we’re doing at first. We just need to jump in and start.
  2. Be okay starting at zero and building from there.
  3. You don’t have to work for free; it’s not fair to you and it’s not a good business model.
  4. If you have haters, direct them elsewhere and move on.
  5. With fear comes action.
  6. Big companies raise their prices; you can too.
  7. Create urgency with short-term sales.
  8. Be prepared to hire when you need to.
  9. You were given your talents and gifts for a reason.
  10. Recognize your worth.
