Lately, each day I’m presented with something new that I would have never thought to be true a few months ago, and in this episode I have Alex Ortner on to discuss one way of dealing with all of the change and uncertainty.
Do you feel the same way?!
This held true the other day when I was looking at my Secret Trend Generator software. (Which you can get access to in the $0-100k course.) As I was scrolling through, I noticed that face masks were trending in sales. Yea, face masks. If you are reading this 6 months from now, I really hope this sounds crazy. I can surely tell you that 6 months ago I would call you crazy if you told me face masks would show as trending.
But these are the times we are living in, and I hope that you and your family are moving forward each day.
Don't Knock It Until You Try It
You’ve probably heard me reference the Brendon Burchard mastermind that I attended a few months ago. There were so many amazing people there, including Mel Abraham, who I just had on the podcast to talk about how to financially fortify your business during these crazy times.
Well, I know there are other areas besides business that you might need help with nowadays. And one of the biggest of them is controlling what’s going on between your ears.
With all the uncertainty out there, this is something we all need.
To help with this, I brought on someone else I met at that mastermind, Alex Ortner.
Alex is the co-owner of The Tapping Solution, a company with a mission to bring “tapping”, a simple, effective, natural healing method into the mainstream. With over 3 million people attending their summits and hundreds of thousands of downloads of their app, I’d say they are on the right track.
But, if you’re like I was, you might need a little more convincing before jumping on the tapping bandwagon. In this interview, Alex Ortner is going to share how it can help you as an entrepreneur and mom. In particular with controlling our emotions, mindset, habits, and belief systems with all the craziness going on in the world right now.
Is Your Brain Playing Tricks?
Alex explained that you have two parts of the brain – the old and the new. The old part, the amygdala, is responsible for the “fight or flight” response that we get. Which, when walking through the wilderness surrounded by big ole’ mean creatures, was quite handy to keep us alive to see another day. See something in the bushes – run!
This worked great then, but life has evolved a bit since our ancestors were living a nomadic life. That’s why Alex says we need a way to control our thoughts. The fight or flight response just isn’t as relevant today. In fact, it’s working against a lot of us.
When we want to pursue that idea or expand our business, this part of our brain throws up a red flag and tells us not to do it. Alex says that it associates these risks with the same life-threatening risks our ancestors faced. But if you always let your brain talk you out of it, you’ll never make any progress in your business because a lot of it is scary – just not that kind of scary.
Knowing this, do you think your amygdala has been playing tricks on you and slowing down your business?
Alex Ortner Explains What Tapping Is
At its core, Alex says it’s a very simple concept that has you tap on certain parts of the body to send a calming signal to the brain. Yeah, I was probably thinking the same thing you are about right now, but let’s get into why this actually works.
Remember that amygdala thing I mentioned above? Well, the goal of tapping on certain parts of the body is to get that thing under control!
Whether it be the stress from what all is going on right now or some big new project for your online shop, you want your brain to make clear and rational decisions. But, if left up to your amygdala, that’ll never happen.
Alex shared a ton of background research that has been done in the past 5-10 years to validate that this is a real thing. In fact, he shared a study that showed that cortisol levels in a group doing tapping went down 48% faster than in a group doing Talk Therapy.
You’ve got my attention now, Mr. Ortner.
Tapping To Get Through The Pandemic
Do you get sucked into the news of all the bad happening right now and leave with a feeling of anxiety and overwhelm? Yeah, I’m right there with you.
As business owners and moms, there is something constantly getting thrown our way right now. I’d bet your kids are at home with you like mine are, and just handling that can seem like enough. Then you add in all the challenges that come with running a business right now, and you might seem like you want to explode.
Alex says that tapping is a solution to help calm this noise and think clearly so you can react appropriately and move your business forward. With all noise, you need some mechanism to lean on to ensure you aren’t stressed out of your mind and anxious every minute of the day.
When done right, this might be your tool.
Alex Ortner Explains The Tapping Locations On The Body
Alex described the 9 different places that are used in the tapping technique. He starts with the easiest to explain, which is the side of your hand. Think about if you were going to karate chop something – the part of the hand that you would envision hitting is the area – that’s location number 1.
The other 8 points are scattered around the body.
2 – Inside of eyebrow
3 – Outside of the eyes
4 – Under the eyes
5 – Under the nose on the lip
6 – On your chin
7 – The sides of your Collar bone
8 – Under your arms, below the armpit
9 – Top of the head
Alex said there are other locations as well, but as a beginner, this is all we should be concerned with for now.
Getting Started Tapping
After Alex explained the points on the body, we actually did a few rounds live on the podcast!
Before we started, Alex explained the basics of how it works.
To get started, first you recite the setup phrase, which is a fill-in-the-blank.
“Even though I have this _________.
I deeply and completely accept myself.”
Alex mentioned that some people find this a bit too “woo” and substitute the second part for something a bit more fitting for them. So, if you aren’t into that, maybe try to change it up.
I had Alex walk through a tapping session to help someone fall asleep, which you can follow along with. Speaking of falling asleep, Alex recommended that you implement this into a morning and evening routine to get the most from it. But keep in mind that he said this is something that you can implement at any point throughout the day.
If you want to follow along with me for my first tapping session, then be sure to pay attention around the 28-minute mark in the episode. That’s when we start setting it up to go through.
If you’re like me and want that guidance then be sure to check out their app, The Tapping Solution.
With the quarantine impacting everyone, having a technique like this can be the difference between pulling your hair out and moving your business forward. Whether you think it’s “woo woo” or not, I encourage you to at least try it and see if it helps you in some way. What’s the worst that could happen?
I’m going to keep bringing you ways to help make it through this tough time, so you can keep moving forward with a smile on your face and sales on your dashboard.
